The Who - Hooligans. In the 1980s MCA Records put out some of the worst quality vinyl ever made by a major label. If you’re looking for old Who records anything with the MCA blue sky rainbow label should be play-tested before purchasing. Despite printing errors on the sleeve and rough edges and intrusive surface noise on the discs, I’ve always been rather fond of this compilation from 1981. That’s why I’ve chosen it to represent The Who today, the 19th of May.

This is the first rock record I ever bought. ELO, Kansas, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Who, Yes, and The Rolling Stones followed soon after. I can’t really remember how I got from there to Frank Zappa, Soft Machine, Camper Van Beethoven, The Sex Pistols, The Replacements, Lightning Bolt and all bands challenging and alternative in general. The feedtime record I just posted is the one that instigated the little email argument that led to the seller calling me names. Here’s a transcript for your amusement. Whether you side with them or me I think most people would find it pretty funny…or not…I don’t know. It seems from this evidence that I have trouble getting my point across via text without coming across as a nerd. And isn’t it supposed to be cool to be a nerd right now anyway?

The record arrived with a three inch seam-split at the top. I left the seller this back-handed positive feedback: ”Listed as “New”,had seam-split,creased cover.Record does look unplayed though.”

They messaged me:

Seller: Hey there _____,

Your feedtime record was new. Received record from

AM REP directly.

Never played. It came w/ the splits.

My response: I understand what you’re saying. Technically, the record is new, as in unused. But part of eBay’s definition, which appears right on the auction page, of “New” is “undamaged.” I feel your auction listing should have mentioned the seam splits. They were not apparent in the photo.

I’m glad I got it for the price I paid, which is why I left positive feedback. I probably would have still paid $10 for it if I’d known about the splits. But feedback is to let other potential bidders know what to expect. I thought it important to mention that, in this case at least, your description was inaccurate.

Me: You admit it was damaged when you got it but failed to mention the damage to your bidders. If I bought something at a store that turned out to be broken I would not turn around and try to pass it off to someone else as new. And if “straight outta the plastic” means it was wrapped and you unwrapped it, that is also not “new.”

Call me all the names you want. That’s just bad business.

Don’t sell to me again, block me, whatever. I don’t care. At least you got $10 and a positive out of it.

That’s where I gave up. I knew we were never going to agree about what “New” means. The record itself is great. I got it for a good price. And I rather enjoyed sparring with this guy (or gal). But I have two questions. 1: Am I difficult? And 2: What does ”straight outta the plastic” mean?
